DESCRIPTION

Summary:

The Peer Recovery Coach will act as a support and resource for adults related to substance abuse and behavioral health treatment services. The Peer Recovery Coach will act as a key member of the treatment team by working with consumers one-on-one to support them in achieving goals and connecting consumers to community resources. The Peer Recovery Coach will support consumer skills in order to improve their overall functioning and quality of life. The Peer Recovery Coach is an individual with lived experience in recovery from a substance use disorder and/or co-occurring mental health condition who uses their personal recovery experience, training, and skills to support individuals seeking and maintaining recovery. The Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical, person-centered support, promotes self-determination, assists with navigation of behavioral health systems, and helps individuals identify and achieve recovery goals. The Peer Recovery Coach serves as a role model for recovery, engages individuals in treatment and recovery supports, and helps reduce barriers to accessing community resources and services. This position works in tandem with the SUD Adult  treatment team. This position reports to the Adult MI Program Supervisor.

 

Duties and Competencies

  1. Build and foster relationships with the consumer, community partners and other key supports.
  2. Actively engage as part of the treatment team to meet consumer needs, complete all required documentation and paperwork.
  3. Prepare the consumer to fully participate in their own meetings and treatment processes.
  4. Teach self-advocacy, problem-solving and independent living skills.
  5. Provide support during “rough” or “crisis” times.
  6. Empower the consumer to build understanding in others about their unique mental health needs.
  7. In collaboration with the consumer, work with other internal and external partners (i.e., schools, faith community, other human services organizations) to develop natural supports to eliminate barriers to services, enhance existing community services or develop new services based on the needs of the consumer.
  8. Provide consultation and education to consumer and use problem-solving techniques with the objective of assisting consumer in improving or maintaining functioning.
  9. Serve as a role model and active participant in supporting consumer in meeting their treatment plan goals.
  10. Conducts consumer check-ins as necessary and appropriate.
  11. Assists in facilitating community referrals to resources identified by the treatment team, consumer and family.
  12. Provide transportation for consumer to resources, treatment and other key activities for successful community re-entry
  13. Attends staff, team and department meetings.

Performs other related duties as assigned

  1. Maintain working knowledge of trends in the mental health field through participation in recovery based trainings, conferences, reading and committee/meetings both on a local, affiliate, state or national level.
  2. Follow oral and written direction completing tasks as assigned by due dates.
  3. Maintain working knowledge of software applications used in performance of daily duties.

Corporate Compliance Responsibilities:

  1. Complies with and maintains competence with all applicable laws, regulations, standards, and rules governed under Medicare, Medicaid, the Michigan Department of Health and Human (MDHHS), Joint Commission, and any applicable funding sources.
  2. Understands, adheres and maintains competence with all MCMHA and CMHPSM standards, policies, procedures as they appear in MCMHA’s, Management of Information, Finance-Contract Management, Recipient Rights, Performance Improvement, Administration, Human Resources, Environment and Provision of Care Policies.
  3. Complies with and maintains competence with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations as they pertain to privacy and confidentiality.  
  4. Interacts appropriately with Managers and peers.  Performs required duties with an awareness of impact upon the Authority structure as a whole. 
  5. Works as a Team Player within the entire Authority Structure.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Licensing Credentials:

  • Have a High School diploma or GED.
  • Completion of or have the ability to complete the state approved training for Peer Recovery Coach
  • A self-identified current or former user of substance use disorder or co-occurring services who can relate to others who are now using these services.
  • Within the last three years, have 12 months (not necessarily consecutive) full or part-time paid or volunteer work experience: one year of college or other educational experience (within the last three years) can be substituted for work experience.
  • A commitment to recovery, choice, empowerment, and the ability of people with serious mental illness and/or co-occurring disorders to find meaningful lives in the community.
  • Ability to establish a trusting relationship with peers, including excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Detail oriented with good writing and organizational abilities.
  • Ability to network within the community and work with diverse populations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, and reliable transportation.
  • Satisfy required State Police clearances.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, judiciary, court administration, and community agencies

 

Other Competencies and Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a complex, detail-oriented, deadline structured, busy organization.
  • The following physical and mental abilities are required:  frequent lifting or carrying up to 15 pounds, must be able to hear, frequent sitting/standing/walking, ability to communicated effectively in person and/or phone, the ability to read, analyze and interpret information, ability to write correspondence and procedures, ability to maintain records, ability to remain impartial during investigative procedures, ability to solve practical problems, ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, ability to influence others.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Outlook, Word and such other applications if/when required.
  • Ability to be trained and successfully complete other computer training as required.
  •  Valid driver’s license, proof of current automobile insurance and driving record determined by the Authority’s insurance carrier to be eligible for coverage if required as part of positions duties.
